Fortification, ca. 1690-ca. 1750.

Gathering of 15 leaves without cover, written on both sides; loosely sewn together (five leaves are detached). Most of the pages have technical drawings in brown ink, some with segments highlighted with color washes. French manuscript about the construction of fortifications. The anonymous author mentions that he is following "la nouvelle Méthode de M. de Vauban," the military engineer of King Louis XIV, renowned for his new line of defenses. The text has no introduction or formal closing. The main issues presented are: bastion profiles, buttresses, ditches; wall masonry with incorporation of the rock in place; barracks for troops and officers; emplacement of cannon and mortar batteries. The author explains how to choose the best timber and stone, how to prepare the mortar and deal with underground water sources while digging the foundations, adding at the end an illustrated list of iron tools and instruments. The text also includes mandatory safety rules for masons and diggers, basic obligations of entrepreneurs, and a short estimate of costs with some market references.
